PTE Read Aloud practice
You get 30–40 seconds to prepare, then read the text aloud. Scored on content, oral fluency and pronunciation — and content is simply whether you said the words.
Content is scored by word. Every word you replace, omit or insert is an error. Fluency matters, but a beautifully delivered sentence with three words missing scores worse than a plain one that is complete. Read every word.
Strategy
- Do not stop to fix a mistake. Restarting costs fluency, and the error is already recorded. Keep going.
- Use the preparation time to scan for hard words — long noun phrases and unfamiliar names are where people stumble.
- Keep a steady pace. Rushing hurts pronunciation; long pauses hurt fluency. Aim for even, unhurried delivery.
Frequently asked questions
How is PTE Read Aloud scored?
On three traits — Content (whether you said each word), Oral Fluency and Pronunciation. Since August 2025 Read Aloud contributes to your Speaking score only, not Reading.
How can I improve my Read Aloud score?
Use the 30–40 second prep to chunk the text by punctuation and spot hard words, read in steady thought groups, and never stop to correct a slip — restarting costs more fluency than the error.
