PTE Listening Multiple Choice tips (2026)
Strategy for single- and multiple-answer listening MCQs — including how the scoring rewards and penalises choices.
How it works
You hear a recording and choose the correct option(s). Single answer has one correct choice; multiple answers can have several.
Strategy
- Read the options before the audio starts.
- Take quick notes on the main idea and any strong opinions.
- For multiple-answer: only select options you're confident about — a wrong pick can cancel a right one.
Multiple-answer items give partial credit for correct picks but deduct for wrong ones, so don't over-select.
Frequently asked questions
Is there negative marking in PTE listening MCQ?
Multiple-answer items give points for correct options and deduct for incorrect ones (not below zero). Single-answer items have no deduction.
Should I guess?
On single-answer, always pick something. On multiple-answer, only select options you're reasonably sure about.
How do I prepare?
Read options first, note the speaker's main point and tone, and practise with scored items.
