PTE Core (2026): the English test for Canadian immigration

What PTE Core is, how it differs from PTE Academic, the CLB score chart for Express Entry, the exam format, and how to prepare.

What is PTE Core?

PTE Core is a computer-based general English test from Pearson, approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for economic immigration — Express Entry and many Provincial Nominee Programs. It is different from PTE Academic, which is used for university study and student visas.

PTE Core → CLB score chart (Express Entry)

The two rows that matter most: CLB 7 (typical minimum to enter the pool) and CLB 9 (maximum language points in the CRS). Minimum section scores:

CLBListeningReadingSpeakingWriting
CLB 9 (max CRS points)82788488
CLB 7 (usual minimum)60606869

Lowest-skill rule: your official CLB is set by your weakest of the four skills — one low band pulls your whole result down, so train all four toward the target.

How to prepare

The skills PTE Core tests — speaking fluency, clear writing, reading and listening — are the same abilities you build with focused, scored practice. Our platform is PTE Academic-focused, but daily practice with a trait-by-trait breakdown transfers directly; confirm PTE Core task specifics on the official Pearson site.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE Core accepted for Canada PR?

Yes. PTE Core is approved by IRCC for economic immigration programs such as Express Entry (Federal Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience Class) and many Provincial Nominee Programs. Always confirm the current list on the official IRCC website.

How is PTE Core different from PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is used mainly for university admission and study visas; PTE Core is a general/workplace English test used for Canadian economic immigration. Both are computer-based, ~2 hours, AI-scored on a 10–90 scale, but the task mix and content differ.

What CLB do I need for Express Entry?

CLB 7 in all four skills is the usual minimum; CLB 9 unlocks the maximum language points in the CRS. Your official CLB is set by your lowest skill, so balance all four.

Can I prepare for PTE Core here?

Our platform focuses on PTE Academic, but the four skills — speaking fluency, writing, reading and listening — transfer directly. Use it to build the underlying ability, then confirm PTE Core specifics with Pearson.
