PTE score for the UK (2026): student visa, universities & work
Which PTE test the UK accepts, the CEFR levels behind each visa, and the scores universities usually want.
Use PTE Academic UKVI
For any UK visa you must take PTE Academic UKVI — a Home Office-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) — at an approved centre. Booking standard PTE Academic will not be accepted for the visa.
Scores by route
| Route / level | CEFR | PTE (each skill) |
|---|---|---|
| Student — degree level | B2 | 59+ |
| Student — below degree | B1 | ~43+ |
| Skilled Worker | B1 | ~43+ |
| Typical university ask | B2–C1 | 65–76 |
The visa minimum and your university's minimum are different numbers — you must meet the higher of the two. Scores are valid for two years.
Frequently asked questions
What PTE score do I need for a UK student visa?
The UK Student route requires CEFR B2, which is PTE 59+ in each skill for degree-level study. Below-degree courses require B1 (about PTE 43+). Many universities ask for higher — commonly PTE 65–76.
Do I need PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI for the UK?
You need PTE Academic UKVI, taken at a Home Office-approved centre. Standard PTE Academic is not accepted for UK visa (SELT) purposes.
How long is the PTE UKVI score valid?
Two years from the test date.
Is the UKVI test harder than normal PTE?
No — the test content is the same. UKVI simply means you sat it at an approved SELT centre so the score counts for UK visas.
