PTE Answer Short Question tips (2026)

How to handle the quick-fire question task and answer confidently in a word or two.

How it works

You hear a short question and answer it in one to three words. It tests everyday vocabulary and general knowledge and feeds both Listening and Speaking.

Tips

  1. Listen for the key noun/verb — the answer is usually a single common word.
  2. Answer immediately and clearly; a confident one-word answer scores full marks.
  3. If unsure, give your best single guess rather than a sentence.

Only the correct short answer earns the mark — don't pad it with a full sentence.
