Exercise 13

← Back to Read Aloud

Task reminder: In 40 seconds, read each text aloud as naturally and clearly as possible. Focus on pacing, intonation, and reading in thought groups — not word by word.

1. Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Artificial intelligence is beginning to reshape healthcare in fundamental ways. Machine learning algorithms trained on large medical datasets can detect cancers in imaging scans with accuracy that rivals or exceeds that of experienced radiologists, predict patient deterioration in intensive care units, and identify potential drug candidates in a fraction of the time traditional research requires. However, the integration of AI into clinical practice raises important questions about accountability when algorithms make errors, the explainability of machine decisions to patients and clinicians, and the potential for training data biases to perpetuate health disparities.

Sample Response:

🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.

2. The Silk Road

The Silk Road was not a single road but a vast network of overland and maritime trade routes that connected China, Central Asia, the Middle East, and Europe for more than a millennium. Silk, spices, precious metals, and glassware were among the goods exchanged, but perhaps more significant were the ideas, religions, and technologies that travelled alongside them. Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity all spread along Silk Road corridors, while inventions such as paper, gunpowder, and the compass made the journey from East to West, profoundly influencing the societies they entered.

Sample Response:

3. Social Media and Democracy

The rise of social media platforms has transformed how citizens access information and participate in political life, creating new possibilities for civic engagement, grassroots organising, and the rapid dissemination of news. Yet the same technologies have also been associated with the spread of misinformation, the fragmentation of public discourse into ideologically homogeneous echo chambers, and the manipulation of elections through targeted advertising and coordinated disinformation campaigns. Democracies around the world are grappling with how to regulate powerful technology companies without suppressing legitimate free expression.

Sample Response:

🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.

4. Nuclear Energy in a Changing Climate

As governments seek to decarbonise their electricity grids and meet climate targets, nuclear energy has re-entered serious policy debates. Unlike wind and solar, nuclear power plants generate electricity continuously regardless of weather conditions, making them a potential source of reliable, low-carbon baseload power. Critics, however, point to the risks highlighted by accidents at Chernobyl and Fukushima, the unresolved challenge of storing radioactive waste safely for thousands of years, and the high capital costs and long construction timelines that make new nuclear projects difficult to finance.

Sample Response:

🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.

5. The Psychology of Sleep

Sleep is not merely a period of rest but an active biological process essential for physical health, cognitive performance, and emotional regulation. During sleep, the brain consolidates memories, clears metabolic waste through the glymphatic system, and restores the neurochemical balance disrupted by wakefulness. Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with elevated risks of cardiovascular disease, obesity, type two diabetes, depression, and impaired immune function. Despite this, many modern societies treat sleep as a dispensable luxury, with artificial lighting, digital screens, and demanding work schedules systematically eroding the quantity and quality of rest people obtain.

Sample Response:

🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
