Speaking › Read Aloud
Exercise 7
Task reminder: In 40 seconds, read each text aloud as naturally and clearly as possible. Focus on pacing, intonation, and reading in thought groups — not word by word.
1. Gene Editing (CRISPR)
CRISPR-Cas9 is a revolutionary gene-editing technology that allows scientists to modify DNA sequences with unprecedented precision. Originally discovered as part of the bacterial immune system, CRISPR has since been adapted to edit genes in virtually any organism, including humans. The technology holds enormous promise for treating hereditary diseases, developing disease-resistant crops, and potentially eradicating certain pathogens. However, its application in human germline editing has sparked intense ethical debate about the boundaries of scientific intervention.
Sample Response:

2. Urban Planning
Effective urban planning is critical to the sustainability and liveability of modern cities. Planners must balance competing demands — housing affordability, transportation efficiency, green space provision, and economic growth — while anticipating future population changes and climate risks. Cities that invest in walkable neighbourhoods, integrated public transit, and mixed-use zoning tend to have lower carbon footprints, reduced traffic congestion, and higher reported levels of resident wellbeing compared to those dominated by car-dependent sprawl.

3. The Renaissance
The Renaissance, meaning “rebirth” in French, was a cultural and intellectual movement that emerged in fourteenth-century Italy before spreading across Europe over the following two centuries. It represented a renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman thought, expressed through transformative advances in art, architecture, literature, and science. Figures such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Galileo epitomised the Renaissance ideal of the universal individual — a person of broad knowledge, creativity, and intellectual curiosity.
Sample Response:
🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
4. Microbiome Research
The human microbiome — the community of trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses residing in and on our bodies — plays a far more significant role in health than previously understood. Research has linked the gut microbiome to immune function, mental health, metabolism, and susceptibility to chronic disease. Diet, antibiotic use, and early-life exposures significantly shape microbial composition. Scientists are now investigating whether microbiome manipulation, through probiotics or faecal transplants, could treat conditions ranging from obesity to depression.
Sample Response:
🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
5. Blockchain Technology
Blockchain is a decentralised digital ledger technology that records transactions across a network of computers in a way that makes them tamper-resistant and transparent. Originally developed to support Bitcoin, blockchain has since found applications in supply chain management, healthcare data, voting systems, and intellectual property protection. Because no single authority controls the ledger, blockchain reduces the need for intermediaries such as banks or notaries. Critics, however, point to its significant energy consumption and scalability limitations as ongoing challenges.
