Speaking › Read Aloud
Exercise 9
Task reminder: In 40 seconds, read each text aloud as naturally and clearly as possible. Focus on pacing, intonation, and reading in thought groups — not word by word.
1. Biodiversity Loss
Earth is currently experiencing its sixth mass extinction event, driven primarily by human activity. Habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, invasive species, and climate change are collectively pushing species to extinction at a rate estimated to be one thousand times higher than natural background levels. The loss of biodiversity threatens ecosystem services that underpin human survival, including pollination, water purification, and climate regulation. Scientists warn that the collapse of biodiversity will have cascading consequences for food security and human health globally.
Sample Response:
🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
2. Digital Privacy
In the digital age, personal data has become one of the most valuable commodities in the global economy. Every online interaction — from search queries to location tracking — generates data that corporations and governments collect, analyse, and monetise. While this enables personalised services and targeted advertising, it also creates serious risks of surveillance, identity theft, and manipulation. Regulators worldwide are grappling with how to balance the economic benefits of data-driven industries with individuals’ fundamental right to privacy and autonomy.
Sample Response:
🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
3. The Silk Road
The Silk Road was not a single route but a vast network of trade and cultural exchange routes connecting China with Central Asia, the Middle East, and eventually Europe, operating for over a millennium from around 130 BCE. While silk was the most celebrated commodity transported westward, merchants also traded spices, glassware, precious metals, and paper. Perhaps more consequentially, the Silk Road facilitated the transmission of ideas, religions, diseases, and technologies between civilisations that would otherwise have had little contact.
Sample Response:
🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
4. Sleep Science
Sleep is a biological necessity, not a luxury. During sleep, the brain consolidates memories, clears metabolic waste products through the glymphatic system, and regulates hormones that govern appetite, stress response, and immune function. Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with significantly elevated risks of obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and depression. Despite widespread cultural attitudes that equate reduced sleep with productivity, research consistently demonstrates that adults require seven to nine hours of sleep per night to maintain optimal cognitive and physical performance.
Sample Response:
🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
5. Renewable Energy Storage
One of the greatest technical challenges in the transition to renewable energy is storage — the ability to preserve surplus electricity generated by solar panels or wind turbines for use when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing. Lithium-ion batteries currently dominate the market, but researchers are actively developing alternatives including solid-state batteries, flow batteries, compressed air energy storage, and green hydrogen. Breakthroughs in storage technology are widely regarded as essential to achieving a fully decarbonised electricity grid.
Sample Response:
🎤 Read the passage aloud. Focus on natural pacing, clear pronunciation, and reading in thought groups rather than word by word.
